About NAIO

What is the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO)?

The National AI Office (NAIO) is Malaysia’s central authority responsible for driving the nation’s AI agenda. NAIO aims to enhance the country’s AI capabilities by fostering innovation, promoting cross-sector collaboration, and supporting the integration of AI into government, industry, and societal frameworks. NAIO spearheads initiatives that leverage AI to strengthen the digital economy, improve public services, and contribute to sustainable development goals.

When was NAIO established?

On 28 August 2024, the Cabinet of Malaysia approved the setting up of NAIO. It was officially launched by the Prime Minister of Malaysia on 12 December 2024. In its early stages, NAIO will operate under the guidance of MYDIGITAL Corporation, a government agency tasked with overseeing Malaysia’s digital transformation efforts. The incubation period is one (1) year.

Why was NAIO established, and what are its primary functions?

NAIO was established to:

  • Strategise and coordinate AI development: Develop Malaysia’s AI strategy, including roadmaps and frameworks to guide the country’s AI growth.
  • Centralise resources for efficiency: Optimise financial and talent resources to advance AI technology.
  • Standardise AI governance: Develop ethical guidelines, security measures, and compliance frameworks.
  • Regulate AI development: Establish policies ensuring safe and responsible AI use.
  • Foster AI innovation: Accelerate innovation by fostering coordinated research efforts, encouraging partnerships among researchers, academia, industry, and government agencies to drive cutting-edge AI solutions.

What are the anticipated goals of NAIO?
