Why is Malaysia establishing AI Malaysia Berhad?
AI Malaysia Berhad marks Malaysia's transition from building the foundations of AI to delivering AI at national scale.
Over the past two years, the Malaysian Government, through the Ministry of Digital, established the National AI Office (NAIO), developed the National AI Action Plan 2026–2030, strengthened AI governance and mobilised partnerships across government, industry and academia.
AI Malaysia Berhad builds on these foundations by becoming Malaysia's permanent national institution responsible for driving AI implementation, coordination and ecosystem development.
It represents the Malaysian Government's long-term commitment to ensuring AI delivers real economic value, strengthens public services and improves the lives of Malaysians.
What is the role of AI Malaysia Berhad?
AI Malaysia Berhad is Malaysia's national lead AI agency under the Ministry of Digital. Established through the institutionalisation of the National AI Office (NAIO), AI Malaysia drives the implementation of the National AI Action Plan 2026–2030 in advancing the nation's AI Nation 2030 aspiration.
Launched by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim on 28 July 2026, AI Malaysia’s responsibilities span six strategic functions:
- AI Strategy, policy and foresight;
- National AI implementation and coordination including the implementation and delivery of the National AI Action Plan 2026-2030;
- AI governance, trust and assurance;
- International affairs and strategic partnerships on AI;
- National AI capability development; and
- Malaysia AI Safety Institute (MY-AISafe)
How is AI Malaysia Berhad different from NAIO?
NAIO was established as an incubation office to build Malaysia's AI foundations. AI Malaysia Berhad represents the next phase of national maturity on AI.
As a permanent institution – Malaysia’s national lead AI agency - AI Malaysia Berhad has a broader mandate, stronger institutional capacity and greater operational agility to coordinate long-term implementation of AI Nation 2030, strengthen AI governance, attract specialised talent and build enduring partnerships across government, industry and the international community.
It transforms Malaysia's AI agenda from planning into sustained national execution.
How will AI Malaysia Berhad contribute to the success of AI Nation 2030?
AI Nation 2030 sets the national ambition. AI Malaysia Berhad is the institution responsible for helping turn that ambition into measurable outcomes.
It will coordinate implementation across ministries and sectors, monitor progress, resolve cross-cutting issues, strengthen ecosystem partnerships and ensure that national priorities remain focused on delivery.
In this way, AI Malaysia Berhad becomes the institutional engine that drives the successful implementation of AI Nation 2030.
